What Is Sawdust Dryer?

With the rapid development of global wood processing, wood-based panel manufacturing and biomass energy industries, effective utilization of sawdust and other wood processing by-products has gained great attention.

As core equipment in the wood industry chain, the sawdust dryer efficiently removes moisture from sawdust and boosts its utilization value, which is indispensable for modern wood processing and biomass energy production.

Sawdust Dryer

1. Definition of Sawdust Dryer

The sawdust dryer is a continuous drying machine specially designed for sawdust, wood shavings, wood flour and other wood scraps.
Adopting professional thermal drying technology, it processes high-moisture sawdust with initial moisture content of 30%-60%, and evenly dries it down to target moisture of 8%-15% in sealed or semi-sealed environment, meeting standards for further processing, storage and direct application.
It perfectly solves the drawbacks of traditional sun drying, such as large floor space, long drying cycle, weather restriction and uneven moisture. It realizes industrial, continuous and automatic sawdust drying and greatly improves economic benefits of wood waste materials.

2. Working Principle of Sawdust Dryer

It adopts convective hot air drying principle, realizing water evaporation through heat and mass exchange between hot airflow and wet sawdust.

2.1 Heat Generation Stage

Clean hot air is generated by hot blast stove, steam heat exchanger or other heat sources, which can be fueled by coal, gas, oil or biomass. The hot air temperature is adjustable within 120℃-600℃, and is delivered into the dryer main body by induced draft fan.

2.2 Material Contact & Mixing Stage

Wet sawdust is evenly and continuously fed into the drying cylinder via feeding system. Multiple lifting plates inside the rotating cylinder keep lifting and scattering materials to form uniform material curtain, which maximizes contact area between materials and hot air.

2.3 Heat Exchange & Moisture Evaporation Stage

Hot air transfers heat to sawdust to evaporate internal and surface moisture. Constant flowing hot air takes away water vapor in time to maintain stable drying efficiency and speed up dehydration.

2.4 Multi-stage Gradient Drying

High-standard sawdust dryers adopt three-stage segmented drying technology:
  • First drying zone: High temperature area for fast heating and quick removal of free water from high-moisture raw materials.
  • Second drying zone: Lower hot air temperature for stable low-speed drying to avoid material overheating.
  • Third drying zone: Low-temperature drying to remove bound water, ensure even drying effect and prevent material combustion.

2.5 Discharging & Gas Purification

Fully dried sawdust is discharged through discharger for cooling, packaging and storage. Waste gas with fine dust is purified by cyclone dust collector, bag dust collector or wet dedusting system before reaching emission standards.
